FAQ

When will the trek happen?

The Everest Base Camp Trek 2009 will take place sometime between April and May 2009. We will try to coordinate our arrival to Base Camp at the time Everest climbers will be just finishing their acclimatization and preparing for the summit push.

How long will the trek last?

The average duration of an Everest Base Camp trek is about 3 weeks. For a sample itinerary breaking the trek down into individual days, please visit our Trek page.

Where will we meet to begin the trek?

Nepal’s capital city, Kathmandu is where we will begin and end the trek. As one of the World’s most famous (or is it infamous?) cities, visiting Kathmandu will be an adventure in itself. I love this city and always look forward to spending time there.

Are you guys guiding the trek all by yourselves?

No. We will be leading the trek, but all of the logistics, guiding, flotsam and jetsam will be handled by Mountain Tribes. MT is a Nepali owned, Kathmandu-based company that has a stellar reputation for adventuresome, safe and enjoyable treks and mountaineering. If you’ve watched Jon’s podcast then you are already familiar with some of Mountain Tribes’ staff. These guys are top notch.

How many people will be able to join the trek?

So far, we’re thinking that in order to guarantee a successful learning environment for the workshop aspect of this trek we will need to limit the group to 10 participants plus Jon & Chris and their Sherpa staff. This is going to be a very intense experience and we want to keep it small so everyone will get to know each other and still have full access to Jon & Chris.

How difficult will the trek be physically?

Let’s not beat around the bush. The trekking will be physically demanding. None of the hiking will be technical or difficult, but it will all be at relatively high altitudes. The starting point for the actual hiking is the town of Lukla at 9,350 feet (2850m). The duration of the 3 week trek is all calculated to maintain our health and safety. You cannot just walk up to Base Camp in one long marathon hiking session. The pace of the trek will assure proper acclimatization to the altitude and also allow for infinate opportunities to enjoy the views! You will need to be physically fit to trek with us, but there’s no need to be super-human.

Is Nepal safe to visit?

Nepal is a country in transition from an old government to a new government and has been experiencing some growing pains recently in the forms of public protests and occasional violence. However, much of the economy is based on tourism and so it is actually quite safe to visit this beautiful country as a tourist. Jon has visited Kathmandu 4 times since 2003 and has never felt any danger or peril.

How much will this adventure cost?

OK. We don’t know yet. Since we will be conducting the trek as a workshop for photography and videography it will cost substantially more than if you were to simply arrange a Base Camp trek independently. That being said, the final price we will come to should be all-inclusive for each trekker. We will handle all of the logistics, permits, food and lodging. Remember, the price will include a full Everest Base Camp trek plus a full-blown photography workshop! You will have to get yourself to Kathmandu; we’ll take it from there.

I’m very interested. How do I get more information?

Right now the best way to stay current as the trek continues to evolve is to sign up for our email updates. You can subscribe to the updates on our “Get Updates” page. Clever, huh?
